Two Decades of Innovation in Metamaterials, Metasurfaces, and Wireless Power Transfer

Professor Chinmoy Saha from the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology delivered the invited talk “2006–2026: Two Decades of Innovation in Metamaterials, Metasurfaces, and Wireless Power Transfer — Shaping the Future of Electromagnetic Technologies” at Queen's University Belfast.

The seminar took place on Monday, 12 October 2026, from 11:00 am to 12:00 noon in the Seminar Room of the NITC building. The talk surveyed his group's work from theoretical electromagnetic concepts to experimentally validated devices and systems.

Activity highlights

  • Metamaterials and metasurfaces use engineered subwavelength structures to control electromagnetic waves in new ways.
  • The talk traced compact, multifunctional antennas and high-selectivity microwave filters for wireless and sensing applications.
  • Applications included antennas for 4G, 5G, and 6G, plus frequency-reconfigurable and spectrum-sensing cognitive radio platforms.
  • RF energy harvesting, rectennas, and metasurface-assisted wireless power transfer were discussed as routes toward self-powered networks.
  • Experimental prototypes connected theoretical ideas with practical communication, sensing, and energy systems.
  • Future directions included intelligent metasurfaces, integrated wireless power and communication, and sub-THz platforms for 6G.
